Fighting the Brokenness of Work

Recently I mentioned in my message "The Brokenness of Work" that sin not only has infiltrated our offices but systems which impact us both nationally and globally. The example given in the sermon was about global slavery where shockingly up to 27 million people live under the horrendous conditions of forced labor. Unfortunately, the havoc sin wreaks in the "wide-angle" of work around the world has other insidious manifestations. Here are a few websites that give us a glimpse not only into some of those problems but offer potential solutions as well. If you are interested in fighting the brokenness of work on a global scale these links may be a helpful start. If you find a term you haven't heard before (e.g, microlending) please take some time to discover what it is and how it might intersect your commitment to living out the Kingdom-values of the Gospel.

PLEASE NOTE: These links are not endorsed by the elders of CCCC but are given for the convenience of the reader with the understanding that he will employ biblical discernment as to what and how much of the content expresses the individual's commitment to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

I have been doing nothing but reading Safely Home by Randy Alcorn the past two days (I am on vacation) which is an amazing novel, I have been completely engrossed in it. I just got on the website to see if CHLTB was still on, and I happened to read your blog. Funny how God always lines up the message he sends in a layering process. It seems He often sends the same message (from different people and/or the Bible, sermons, blogs, devotional time, etc.) in a way that they compound each other! I appreciate God being so clear. I thought it was neat that your blog paralleled what I have been reading in Safely Home. I am shocked and saddened by what I am learning about the slavery and persecution so many are enduring, especially Christians. The strong faith they must have to endure the hardships they go through makes me realize how far I have to go. It is so humbling to realize we have such freedom in our Christianity but at times I find myself dragging my feet to open my Bible in the morning! I pray my faith and reverence for God grows with the same kind of passion these people display! I wish that we had some sort of guide that would tell us how we can live without patronizing companies and/or products that come from these slave labor companies and manufacturers. My heart hurts for these people, and as an American consumer, I buy "Fair Trade" when possible, usually, but is there anything else I can do or teach my children? God's message to me this week has been a "lasagna" of knowledge regarding the enslaved, persecuted Christians, and martyrs, so what do I do with it? I know as an American housewife/mom I cannot do much to cause change, but I want to do everything I can. I know I will start by praying, but I want a challenge. What can I do to make a difference? What as a church can we do?? Thank you for preaching and talking about these shocking issues.
